CHAPTER ELEVEN
Light flooded my vision, and searing hot pain flashed over my face and hands. Apparently they had fitted their car with full-spectrum headlights. Artificial lights could never be as damaging as the sun, but they had one advantage. My car's windows were specially tinted and treated against sunlight, but artificial UV light could pierce through and mess with my eyes. It was weird sometimes, how science occasionally got one up on faith. I panicked, threw the engine in reverse with a grind of gears and the smell of burning rubber, and lurched backwards. I smashed into another vehicle parked behind me, and Big Chin's car roared.
âWell,â I said. âThis is gonna suck.â
The Thugmobile rammed my front end, bouncing my forehead off the steering wheel as it sandwiching my car up against the parked vehicle behind me. The good news was that they hadn't had the time or distance to pick up any real speed, and I immediately put my car back in drive and gunned the engine, forcing my car back against his. Both our hoods crumpled, and his headlights went out, solving that problem. I caught the briefest glimpse of him and his overweight passenger yelling something at each other.
The cars I bought had never been terrible, but they weren't exactly luxury vehicles, either. I always aimed for average, reliable transportation, and evidently so did Big Chin and Pumpkinhead. We played the worst shoving match ever for a couple of seconds before both cars gave out at roughly the same time. Mine made a sound like a bowling ball falling into a pan, and died. Big Chin revved his engine, and gunned it, only for his crumpled car to lurch once and stop. Smoke poured out of both of our cars. Well, in the past two days, I had wrecked one car, but they had ruined two. That meant I was winning, right?
I grabbed my gun and tried to get out only to find that my car door had broken in all the chaos. Both Big Chin and Pumpkinhead got out of their car in front of me, so I scrambled to the passenger side, and wrenched the door open from there. I hit the ground running, and took momentary stock of the situation.
Okay. Two men with the means to kill a vampire were after me. My car was wrecked. The hospital had probably called the police with my description. The sun was coming up soon. Well, I had a gun.
I ducked around the corner, and as soon as the two men came within sight, I pointed my gun at them. âI can see you!â I shouted. âAnd I can shoot you both! Drop your weapons right now!â
Instead of dropping his weapons, Big Chin shoved a wooden cross into my face. I flinched and stumbled back, and my shot went wide. Holy objects didn't all affect vampires in the same way. If a person with real, genuine faith wielded one, it would have forced me to escape or burn.
